Common questions

Retirement planning answers

Straightforward answers to the questions we hear most from pre-retirees and retirees.

When should I start planning for retirement?

The best time to start is as early as possible — ideally in your 40s or 50s. But even if you are within 5 years of retirement, there are meaningful strategies to reduce tax risk, optimize Social Security timing, and build a sustainable income plan. It is never too late to improve your position.

What is tax risk in retirement, and why does it matter?

Tax risk is the danger that taxes will erode your retirement income more than you planned. Required Minimum Distributions, Social Security taxation thresholds, Medicare IRMAA surcharges, and potential tax law changes can all take a bigger bite than expected. Proactive tax risk planning helps you keep more of what you have saved.

When is the best time to claim Social Security?

The optimal claiming age depends on your health, other income sources, spousal benefits, and tax situation. Claiming early at 62 permanently reduces your benefit, while delaying to 70 maximizes your monthly payment. We model different scenarios to find the strategy that puts the most money in your pocket over your lifetime.

Do I need an estate plan if I am not wealthy?

Yes — estate planning is for anyone who wants to protect their family. A basic plan includes a will, beneficiary designations, powers of attorney, and healthcare directives. Without one, state law decides what happens to your assets and who makes decisions for you if you cannot.
